Interview w/Dead

CAN YOU GIVE A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE BAND?
"I haven't been in Mayhem a long time and this is from my sight of the history. Mayhem were created back in '84, but when things begun to happen it were '85 when the reh./demo 'Pure Fuckin' Armageddon' were recorded (100ex) and the first and only gig were done. That were long before my time. I were just a little awful and stinky child then. There were soon 2 years ago when the 'Deathcrush' demo were recorded - the same recording but another mixing on the mini-LP who the 1000ex is sold-out now.

"Before I were in this band I had a band in Sweden: I was vocalist in Morbid. We recorded a demo called 'December Moon' in Dec. '87. I have got questions of how my voice sounds like and those who have heard that demo knows, I hope. OK, that demo haven't sold so much but there is always someone who got it. And I will sound like that in Mayhem too. Maybe more screamin' like the sick sounds from the inside of a madman's head but still extreme cruelty if that says anything (?). I will not sound like Maniac on 'Deathcrush' and I'm not tryin' to copy him either.

"I joined Mayhem in Mars [March] this year and moved from Sweden then. Some people had written and say 'shit, it's a different country, how can you do this?'.. There are not so big difference between the countries and the laguages are not more different than English-Australian. The problem were money; I have to move back to my 'home' in Sweden after nearly 2 months. Then I lived there till I got throwed out and have been in Norway for about 2 months again (I think it is).

"Something about the drummer: We've found him some week after that I begun. Before that we have a session drummer: Torben from Vomit. Manheim (who are on 'Deathcrush') leave after the record, as Maniac. Manheim had too much with his job and Maniac lived too far from us. Hellhammer is much better than the other drummers we had before.

"Rehearsal place.. We haven't got one now! I just [rehearsed] a few times on old songs but except for that we haven't [had a] rehearsal for over, I think it is, 6 months. That's not very well, and can destroy a band, but we never give up. The last reh. place we get we're suddenly without any electricity, and we couldn't find another one. That's very sad 'cos it was a very scary cellar there. But we think we will find a new one.

"I think I can say we live on the band, gettin' food and such things. I don't eat but anyway.. We got no jobs and don't want to work so we must be in the band to survive...None of us need to join the army shit. If so, the band [wouldn't] exist now. I'm from Sweden as I said before and it's very easy to get free from the military there. I am crazy so I haven't got to do it. Hellhammer's parents are from [Sweden] too, but he's born in Norway so he's also free from it. Necro Butcher just shouted at 'em so he's also free. Euronymous are nearly free, just some idiot lessons for 2 weeks, but that doesn't count. I don't think we have more history so over to Q.2.."

COULD YOU DESCRIBE THE SCENE IN CORWAY? IS THERE ONE..?
"There isn't many bands here and the scene sucks. Some bands we know are Decaylust, Equinox, Impostor and Vomit. But the scene is growing and so do the underground bands. You're not asking about it but there is a Swedish band I must write here: Merciless - maybe the best death/grind band I had hear."

IS 'POSERCORPSE' YOUR OWN LABEL?
"'Posercorpse Inc.' is completely ours. We don't want any deal or something to slave 2 records each year and get fooled of the money for some shit contract. We get much more money by doing everything ourselves. It's hard work sending records to eveyone, but we can do it and it works.

"Maybe you heard of 'Deathlike Silence Productions' - that's also our label for other bands. To tell you something about it, it's completely Euronymous' own thing. Maybe I will be [helping] on it also, and some bands we will have in this label are: Matricide, Imperator (Poland), Mutilated and Asphyx (Holland), and maybe bands from USSR, Colombia, Peru, Singapore, etc. And we will come to those bands when they will record something..

"But we need alot of help to sell records. Those who want to can write to us at the same address as Mayhem. Those who will help us to sell - you get a free copy if you can sell 10ex or more; and sell for how much you want and pay after. But write how many you want when the records will be out. It will take its time before any records will be done..we must have a [interest?] first."

DOES YOUR NAME REFER TO YOUR MUSIC?
"'Mayhem' fits perfect to our kind of chaotic music. And we will try to keep the sound of obducent [?] chainsaws in your innocent head. The sound will always be awful - we will never begin to play technical thrash. Year after year we will grind on with pure death metal." [note that there was not such a clear distinction between death metal and black metal at this time!]

WHAT SORT OF RESPONSE HAVE YOU HAD FROM FANZINES/MAGAZINES?
"We have got really good response from underground mags, but not the bigger ones [such] as 'Metal Forces', 'Metal Hammer', for example. They write that the music sounds terrible, we can't play and we [do] not comb our hair; but that's just what we wanna hear - Thanx!"

HOW MANY GIGS HAVE YOU DONE?
"Just one. Because [of] the [loss] of reh. place it will take a long time before any tour or something. I think it will be after the single. There are not any finished plans but we will play in South America, UK, France, Netherlands, Italy and Greece. We also plan to have a east [Europe] countries tour: GDR, USSR, Poland and Czechoslovakia."

ANY CURRENT PLANS FOR RECORD RELEASES?
"As soon as possible..but I think we must wait till February to do a single. It will be 3-4 songs on it and after that an LP in France. Maybe it will be more copies of the 'Deathcrush' mini-LP but another cover than the limited ed. That's all we know now."

ANYTHING TO ADD?
"Is there any pregnant girls who are reading this? We do practices abortions, so contact us [!]. ..Hrrrrmm.. Or what about grind on with death-grinding braindamage music and x-rated splatter movies, death grinders!..And possess the living! (I've got always the same problem with that question!)"

"I hope you can excuse that only I were answering this int. and I hope you like the answers.
"OK, I hope you will write back.
"See ya! Your unpleasant friend in death,
"-Dead."
